The Cause

Children at Well
For most Canadians water is something that we don’t have to think about. We turn on the tap and clean water flows. When we are thirsty or dirty we turn on a tap.. In fact we have so much water that we use it for luxurious things like washing our car, our pets and even use it to cool off in the heat of the summer sun. What a blessing water is to us.

To many in our world the thought of clean water from a tap is an inconceivable dream. In many parts of Africa access to clean water is limited or non-existent. Some people have to walk 5-8 kms a day to get water and the water that can be found is full of bacteria and parasites that cause disease and even death. The struggle to get water often consumes their entire day. The dreams of school and making a livelihood are often pushed aside as children and mothers pour all their energy into getting water

Here are some interesting facts about water…

  • Water is the foundation for life, growth and human development.
  • Yet 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water. In Africa, less than half of the people have access to improved water and sanitation.
  • The World Health Organization estimates that 6,000 children die each day from water related illnesses.
  • In communities without easy access to water, children must often haul the heavy water from sources miles away.
  • This heavy labour can cause spinal and reproductive problems, and often prevents them from being able to attend school.
  • In addition, sending children long distances for water puts them in danger of assault.

Over the past two years Run For Wells and our many sponsors and supporters have worked hard to raise awareness and funds for wells in Africa through World Vision. Because of the generous support of our sponsors, runners and volunteers we have raised $48,000 to provide at least three African communities with deep bore wells.

As information becomes available we will post updates about the wells that have been funded as well as the communities that will receive this years wells.

Join us in The Run for Wells as we seek to make a difference… one well at a time!
